Jakob Zopora, Art Director of UNICBLUE, visited the trade fair Gamescom for us and returned to Gelsenkirchen with some fresh ideas. A report:
As in past years, large numbers of young people flocked to Cologne in eager anticipation of their future game favourites. I went on the Friday, so the general public was present in large numbers. The stand concepts were geared towards the gamers, who were mainly keen to try out their new favourites.
What is of interest to me and UNICBLUE is how the latest technological facilities are used and integrated in the trade fair stands. So I definitely wanted to take a closer look at the various VR offerings. A lot of visitors took a sceptical view of VR technology, however: they would like to see enhanced content that is more atmospheric and more gripping in future so that VR is more than just another family and friends add-on.
In addition to the big EA arena, the highlights for me were definitely the Blizzard exhibition stand and the presentation by the online portal wargaming.net.
My overall impression: lots of gaming, not much in the way of stand personnel with background knowledge and a relatively limited amount of showcase frills. It looks like we’ll have to wait for future trade fairs to find out what we can expect of VR in the future.
